Take advantage of the beautiful scenery by going for a stroll in the grounds of the Hope Castle estate and gardens. Known also as Blayney Castle after the plantation castle nearby (from which the town gets its name), Hope Castle has had many owners and uses over the years. Originally a three storey 5 bay Georgian block, the house received many embellishments during the Victorian era including scrolled cresting on the roof parapets and at one stage an ornamental cast iron and glass porch canopy. It was sold in 1853 by the twelfth and last Lord Blaney to the Hope family after whom the famous Hope Diamond is named and later became a convent for many years.The grounds are a scenic vista of lakes, woodlands and complete with a nine hole golf course and soon to be completed new Concra Wood Golf and Country Club. The shores of Lough Muckno Leisure Park in Castleblayney offer beautiful lake views and walking trails through the Black Island woodlands, as well as water-skiing, canoeing, sailing, fishing, wind surfing, power jet skiing. The numerous lakes and rivers throughout the surrounding countryside is an anglers paradise, the rivers and lakes are well stocked with bream, pike, ells, roach, while our rivers have an abundances of fresh water salmon and trout. Local anglers are always on hand to offer advice and assistance and will guide you in the right direction to the lakes of your choice. For the cycling enthusiast County Monaghan is a networks of small country roads and places of historical interest to visitors. Cycle through Patrick Kavanagh country to nearby Inniskeen and learn about the great poet himself and take time out to talk to the locals along the way. Castleblayney is aprox 60 miles from Dublin and 70 miles from Belfast and it borders counties Armagh and Louth and Cavan. It has a growing population of 3,200 and a musical & drama heritage. The town is home to country and western music in the county and it is well known for it's musical links to Big Tom and Paddy Cole. Many of the local pubs and hotels in the town have music nights especially for new emerging music talent in the community. Also soon to be completed is the new state of the art resources centre The Castleblayney Arts and Community Resources Centre will cater for the Dramatics, Cultural, Educational, Recreational needs of the people of Castleblayney and surrounding area and will be a show case for the town's cultural heritage. |
